Sophie Sallade
I had the opportunity to visit with the mega talented, Sophie Sallade recently. Sophie is a linocut artist that creates highly detailed relief prints of largely Richmond-centric landscapes and establishments. Her studio, which is located just outside of Carytown in the heart of Richmond, is a mix of well organized creative utility and decoration that reflects her welcoming personality.
During the visit she was kind enough to demonstrate the relief printmaking process, printing a view of the city from the James River from one of her hand carved linocut pieces. We discussed her road to becoming a full time working artist, rooting artwork in a time and place through record keeping, trips to Japan, and much more. An added bonus was getting to hang with her awesome all black German Shepard, Babs.
You can find out more about Sophie and her work via her website here, and on Instagram here.
